Whistle: Activity Monitoring for Dogs

Whistle: Activity Monitoring for Dogs

It seems like half the people I know right now are using/wearing some sort of activity monitoring device. I wear a Nike Fuelband during the day and a wireless Bluetooth heart rate monitor during runs and hikes; others I know turn to FitBit, a Polar GPS device, or the Jawbone Up for metabolic monitoring. But do you know who may benefit from a little more exercise too? Your dog.

It's not surprising the issue of obesity has arisen for household pets; they're captive to their owner's lifestyle and availability to keep them active (well, except for the times when our two cats decide it's crazy-puffed-up-tail-wide-eyed-wackadoo time all on their own), and I bet many of us underestimate how very little "play time" they get with us each day.

And just like my Nike Fuelband offered a sobering realization and insight about my sedentary lifestyle, inspiring me earlier this year to become more active, this new device designed for dogs offers monitoring and data about a pet's day-to-day behavior.

So what does Whistle exactly do? Just like its human counterpart devices, the collar attachment factors in weight, age, breed, and location to personalize pet activity data. Features include:

  • Activity tracking
  • Rest Monitoring
  • Time Together
  • Breed Comparison
  • Trends & Alerts
  • Custom Analytics
  • Veterinary Reports
And just like I can push my best running times from my monitoring devices online, the dual mode Bluetooth 4.0 (with its always-on, low power requirements compared to traditional Bluetooth) Whistle offers wireless synching and sharing features with up to 10 days of battery life (that may be better than my Fuelband!). Thankfully, unlike most of our recent roundup of pet tracking devices, this one won't carry a monthly subscription fee.

The Whistle is currently available for pre-order at $99.95, with the option to engrave the unit so it can double up as an ID collar. I'm hoping they release a feline-friendly edition, alongside a human companion unit for integrated owner+pet analytics.
