Space-Saving Idea: Digitize Your Holiday Cards Display

My favorite thing about the holidays is receiving photos and well-wishes from friends and family from around the world in handwritten greeting card form. In the fast-paced age of Facebook and Tweets, the long-standing Christmas card tradition is welcomed as a much-needed annual reminder of what's important during the holidays...

Of course, collecting and displaying holiday cards can quickly fill up a credenza or the front of the fridge. That's why, this year, I'm trying out a digital card display using an electronic picture frame.

As cards come in from friends and family, I'll scan everything to my laptop. The beautiful illustrations on store-bought or handmade cards, the sweet messages written inside, the pumpkin patch photos of cousins and nephews puzzled into a photo collage from Minted (like the one in the photo above). All of it gets scanned and saved, and after the first few cards have rolled in, the plan is to load the saved scans onto an inexpensive digital picture frame (something around $30) that will cycle through all the pictures and messages.

The entryway console table that's normally covered with cards and tape for the last two months of the year? That's where I'll put the frame loaded with warm holiday fuzzies.

Dozens of greeting cards can get shrunk down into a small space. And you know what? I think it will make me actually appreciate them more. In past years, once the cards are taped up I rarely go back and read through them. But as the small frame rotates through the scans like a slide show, I can appreciate every "Merry Christmas" and "Happy New Year" that pops up as I'm putting on my coat.
