This Common (and Versatile) Household Item Takes the Cake

One of your best tools for organizing and styling around the house has been hiding in your kitchen all along: Your cake stand (a.k.a, the new catch-all).

These pedestal plates prove they can easily do double duty all over your home when not holding up frosted delectables, because honestly, no one has cake at the ready in their kitchens all day, every day (if you do, however, email me; I'm always open to a new BFF.) Check out these ideas to add a nice slice of chic (see what I did there?) to every room of the house.

Spice it up

Is it just me or is there never enough room by the stove for cooking oils and spices? By introducing a cake plate, you now have an elevated surface area for your cooking accoutrements (like in the above photo from Martha Stewart) while still having useable space for utensils or a spoon rest on the counter.

Layer it on

Layering is key to any successful coffee table-scape. Monterey-based boutique decorating and event studio, 2 Ladies & A Chair uses cake plates as a way to display their decor at varying heights on this pulled-together coffee table.

Jar out!

There's so much to keep organized in our bathrooms. Here, a cake plate is home to some DIY jars filled with some post-shower necessities. Super clever! (via Eighteen 25)

Vanity plate

Nothing gives more credence to the beauty of perfume bottles than the elevation of a cake stand. It's a perfect way to keep those pretty bottles all together and create an attractive display on your vanity, such as this shot from Cosmopolitan.

Party piece

Cake plates are the perfect addition to any table for two reasons: 1. They add height and drama (which every table needs during a soirée) and, 2. They provide a little breathing room between centerpiece arrangements, while still giving that layered look. We like the addition of the natural wood element by Hostess With the Mostess. Try it at the next party or shower you're hosting.

Dry clean

The area around the kitchen sink seems to be constantly damp. Instead of continuously shuffling around all the soaps and cleaners nestled close by, and drying everything off, prop everything higher up and enjoy freedom from the splash-zone!

In good spirits

What's not to love about a bar cart? Sprinkle of Glam smartly used a cake plate to put her cool craft liquors on display. Cheers to that!

Snow day

Ok, so the holidays are nearly 5 months away, but this is definitely one to Pin now for later! Pair a cake plate with a cloche to create a little winter wonderland, like this DIY one from Natalme that can be changed and added to as the season goes and swapped out from holiday to holiday.

Did we miss a clever use for the cake plate? Make sure you share how you use them around the house!
