Style Lessons from Today's Small Cool Entries (& Don't Forget to Enter & Vote!)

Every home has something to teach and each small home in the Small Cool contest holds lessons and tricks for living well while living small.

Below is some wisdom from Thursday's entries (don't forget to vote for your favorites!) →

Inside Out

(above) If you're lucky enough to have outdoor space, treat it like an extension of your home. Amanda has made her patio feel like home with a chair, table, mirror and rug.

Light Study

Enrique's apartment boasts floor-to-ceiling windows, but we all know the sun isn't up all day. Look at his smart use of interior lights (no overheads!) from the pendant above the dining room table, the floor lamp near the sofa for reading and the accent light in his art niche.

Focal Point

Annie owns plenty of art but her small-living strategy is to only display art she truly loves. It helps keep her home feeling uncluttered and keeps the focus on the gems she's chosen to display.

Order Up

We're all for variety, but, in a small home uniformity, like the color and style of these frames, lends to a feeling of order and visual tidiness.

But Can It Store Stuff?

Small home dwellers are always on the lookout to add extra storage especially in inconspicuous ways. Melissa's coffee table is a terrific example — not only is it a coffee table, a work table (with the top raised), but it also provides a good deal of storage. And shout out to her for making it herself.

Yes, You Can

Mia has a teeny tiny bedroom, but that doesn't mean she can't have a nightstand. A small shelf mounted on the wall near the bed offers the same functionality.

Blair smartly placed this irregularly shaped rug at an angle to the sofa instead of parallel which gives the illusion not only of a larger rug, but a larger room.

Use Your Walls

When you have the space we recommend floating your furniture away from the walls, but this isn't always an option in a small room when you need to leave open corridors for movement. Alba is using her wall space wisely for furniture, even placing her desk up against the window.
