Name & Location: Maya in Fort Greene — Brooklyn, New York
My Favorite Room: Master Bedroom Suite
Specs: 700 square feet

The master bedroom floor of our 1903 Brooklyn townhouse was really choppy and awkward with lots of unusable space. There was a very small bathroom, a tiny bedroom (which I basically used as a closet) and a master bedroom with a series of weirdly laid out closets and a random bathroom vanity thrown in the middle. The space had some really great original details, original hardwoods and two fireplaces, but they were completely lost in the choppiness of the layout.

I wanted to create a more open and functional space that would highlight beautiful original aspects of the home. By knocking down almost all of the walls between the rooms, we created a master suite with walk-through closet, soaking tub, separate toilet room & walk-in steam shower.

My absolute favorite part of the bathroom is the custom vanity wall. When we decided to transform that space from a bedroom into part of the bathroom, I struggled with the idea of removing the original hardwood floors. I absolutely love the look of the hardwood floors, but knew it wouldn’t be practical to have them in a bathroom, so I reluctantly decided to go with tile on the floors. I then had the idea to repurpose the original wood by using it on the wall and had a custom vanity made with the same wood. I love mixing different styles together so I combined the rustic look of the wood with industrial steel doors and concrete top, and modern sinks & fixtures. The orb chandelier and the original fireplace add the touch of elegance I think every bathroom needs.

It truly is the master suite of my dreams.
