Fashionable People: JONESY Designer Rachel Jones' Real-Life Style

Rachel Jones is a designer who launched an underwear line, JONESY, in 2015. We recently toured the home that she shares with her husband and fellow creative mind, Adam. We are often curious to take a deeper look into the personal style of the people whose homes we feature and explore how these two aesthetics overlap or remain distinct from one another. In Rachel's case, we can see where her attention to detail and attraction to minimal lines meet in both her approach to her designs and decor. Amidst the basics are elements of fun and quirkiness which reflect Rachel's openminded and generous personality.

Describe your style: Comfortable, quirky, vaguely androgynous and '90s. I feel like I switch between toddler style (jumpsuits galore) and a layered Japanese menswear look…if that makes sense at all.

Three things from your closet you couldn't live without: New-ish flannel black jumpsuit from Black Crane (I feel like a cozy toddler in it!), cowhide clogs from Germany (an obscure Etsy find), and my super comfortable vintage jeans from Mirth.

Your very favorite outfit: At the moment I love pairing my perfectly chunky knit from Zady thrown over a vintage mid-length slip I found years ago at a vintage store in Bushwick. I’d cap this outfit off with my Acne boots from a couple seasons ago to give it a bit of an edge.

Your typical work “uniform”: Given the current weather, I’m leaning towards voluminous knits thrown over cropped or slightly rolled up linen pants. To offset the baggier look of the clothing, I’ll don my platform rain boots from Zara or lace-ups from COS. For warmth and a spark of color, I’ll throw on my robe coat from Nanushka.

The #1 item from your fashion wish list: I can’t wait for Sandy Liang jeans to go on sale again. I bought a pair on final sale four months ago and didn’t pay close enough attention to the fit details. Needless to say, once they arrived and I tried them on, they were huge…and beyond the realm of alteration. So, there they lay, in my closet, unused and a daily reminder of the risk inherent to shopping final sales online.

As a designer what are your goals for your label? I’d love to grow JONESY, my underwear line, into a more established undergarments brand. We currently sell a couple of styles and are featured at multiple boutiques around the country, so I’m excited for what’s in store in 2016. There’s definitely been a huge learning curve since our launch early in 2015, so I’m looking forward to collaborating with more creatives in the industry, and really, just having fun as we try new things.

Where did you get the idea to start JONESY? JONESY arose from the desire to find (and wear) a bra that was both stylish and durable—in other words, a garment that wouldn't dissolve after a couple of washes. I’m smaller chested, so I've drifted between lacy bralettes and sportier bras, but always felt limited by my options (and care instructions—I've yet to hand wash a bra!). With the resurgence of '90s minimalism and sportier wear (I hate the word athleisure), I felt like there was an opportunity to create undergarments that felt grown up and stylish, but were still suited for day-to-day activities.

IRL shop: Currently, I’m loving the mix of textures and the muted colors curated at the Frankie Shop. I’m not familiar with most of the lines they carry, so I love the potential for discovery every time I step through their doors. Another local boutique, Ad Hoc, is another store I frequent for finding new designers (including my Giu Giu jumpsuit from this summer). They carry the JONESY label in their store so I’m often popping by to check in.

Online shop: Spartan and Kaufmann Mercantile. I’m all about shopping for home goods at this stage of my life.

Signature scent: I’m in an in-between phase scent-wise, so at most I’ll steal a spray from my husband’s Aesop Marrakech fragrance.

Grooming products: Aesop body wash, Trader Joe’s tea tree oil face wash, Herbivore face oil, face lotion from a French pharmacy, and Neutrogena Ultra Sheer sunscreen.

Makeup brand: Glossier, YSL, and Bobbi Brown.

Haircare brand: Aesop clarifying shampoo and conditioner—the Aesop products were bought as quasi-souvenirs from a weekend trip to Boston (and there lay our priorities!).

Best jeans: Vintage. If you don’t mind the crowds on a Saturday or a time-intensive search through dozens of clothing racks, Urban Jungle off the Morgan L stop has some of the best variety for really accessible prices. Come prepared to change in public if you don’t want to wait 5-10 minutes for a changing stall!

Coolest sneakers: FEIT. My husband recently picked up a pair of their leather high-tops, which I wish I could steal.
