HGTV/DIY show: Design on a Dime
Contestant partnered with: Kyle Huntoon

What’s one word that describes your partnership with your contestant? Midwestern

How would you describe your style?

When it comes to design my style is more contemporary, I love organic elements like the grain of an exotic wood and veins from a unique stone incorporated into a modern and architectural look. I really have a passion for functionality the duality of a piece that’s blends together that form and function.

Favorite power tool?

Im all about the rotary tools… adjusting the texture of a surface with a orbital sander or right angle grinder is pretty cool.

What was the first project you ever built? The toughest? The most fun?

My first project that I can recall was when I was 8 or 9. My dad and brother were building a mockup of a solar home for the science fair and I used the leftover scraps to make my very own version.

The toughest project by far was completing a medical office renovation in just over 72 hours with my Alive Design team. We gave a full face lift to a 3,000 square foot space including reception area and examination rooms all before staff got back to work on a Monday morning….#powerofplanning

The most fun has been working on Ellen's Design Challenge... with all the tools there it's like being a kid in a candy store.

What’s easier to DIY than people realize?

Actually general household maintenance isn’t that tough with the right guidance. Light plumbing, simple electrical, and basic carpentry can be a snap if you follow the instructions and best practices of experts….practice makes perfect!

What are 3 things every beginner should have in their toolkit?

Vise grips (locking pliers), WD40 (spray lubricant), Ductape ( adhesive tape)

Best advice:

Don’t be afraid to mess up cause that’s a surefire way to learn.

Be prepared to measure more than twice before you cut…trust me.

Get familiar with the layout of the hardware store because after you start your project multiple return trips are inevitable.

Thanks, Ali!
