A Bohemian-Inspired Dutch Canal House

Name: Morgan Schemel
Location: Utrecht, Netherlands
Size: 1000 square feet
Years lived in: Rented 2 years

My partner and I moved to the Netherlands in January 2015 with two suitcases and some family photos. We had to wait more than four months for the rest of our shipment to arrive and used that between time to explore the local thrift stores and markets for unique pieces to fill our home.

Both of us are from Chicago, and so we knew we wanted a space that would feel like an oasis from the busy city life we left behind. We opted for a bohemian-meets-modern inspired style that would bring together our knickknacks from travel and our growing collection of art.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Our house is bohemian-inspired with a mix of modern and Mid-Century finds. Really just a relaxed place to escape city life.

Inspiration: A wild, untamed garden.

Favorite Element: Wicker chair in the living room and our Moroccan rug. We love the look of mixed textures!

Biggest Challenge: Bringing together three separate spaces into one (living room, kitchen, and dining).

What Friends Say: Our friends come over and instantly feel relaxed. They often tell us how at home they feel here.

Biggest Embarrassment: Our cat Frankenstein's litter box. He refuses to use it when it's hidden in the bathroom!

Proudest DIY: The golden bike bar! We get lots of compliments on it.

Biggest Indulgence: Our leather bed.

Best Advice: Have fun and be unique!

Dream Sources: Anthropologie and Jersey Ice Cream Co.
