Name: Gina
Location: Canberra — Australian Capital Territory, Australia

Located in the leafy suburb of Hughes, Canberra, Australia, our newly built architectural home uses contemporary black metal cladding and red brick to connect the house with the more traditional homes in the area. We originally bought the land nine years ago with a small white brick house on the block and made some renovations immediately to make the house liveable. Over time, it became clear the electrical and plumbing would need redoing, and the home was showing signs of structural damage too. We engaged architect Rob Henry to develop a concept sketch that would make better use of the block and provide a rental income by designing a granny flat.

I'm inspired by contemporary Australian design. Our split level home houses some beautiful pieces by Australian artists and makers, such as a large artwork by emerging artist Annie Everingham which sets the tone for the kitchen/dining area. Black accents in the hardware, window frames and tapware add a moody modern edge.

I particularly love our kitchen with a combination of black timber grain and white joinery. The copper tap and black sink were my splurge buys and the butler's pantry is a real treat.

I'm especially proud of our guest bedroom, which feels like such an inviting space, just what I was trying to achieve to help my guests feel at home.

The nursery I'm finishing for my baby son is another room I'm proud of. It is an itsy-bitsy space, but I like to think it's packed full of style.

Thanks, Gina!
