Ahead of the Curve: 5 Beautiful New Trends for the Kitchen

We're always being presented with different new trends for the kitchen, but there are some that capture your mind in a particular way. Here are five trends for the kitchen that besides being new and a little different, are especially lovely — ways to add a little luxury and beauty to a space you use every day.

1. Showstopping sinks.
Farmhouse sinks are nothing new, but a marble farmhouse sink — well, that's definitely different. Whether it's a stone sink integrated with a stone countertop or an undermount design that adds a little pizzazz to a minimalist kitchen, look for sinks that are more than just utilitarian.

2. The rise of the range hood.
We should've seen this one coming: the disappearance of upper cabinets in the kitchen means that the range hood is suddenly front and center, and designers are responding by making it something you'd actually want to look at.

3. The return of the china cabinet.
Glass-fronted china cabinets, whether vintage or built-in, are (we hope) more than just a fad. All those lovey dishes were meant to be seen.

4. Mixed materials.
Can't decide whether you want solid surface or marble countertops in the kitchen? Torn between white cabinets and grey ones? The good news is that you don't have to pick just one. More and more kitchens are mixing multiple cabinet and countertop finishes, to great effect.

5. Brass/gold details.
Who doesn't love something shiny? Count on brass and gold — the current 'in' metals — to add a bit of a special touch to your kitchen.
