Pastels have been popular for quite some time now, but lately there's a subtle shift in the kinds of pastels I'm seeing — from Easter egg shades to equally lovely, but more muted, pastels in unsaturated shades of pink, blue, and even purple. These new pastels have a slightly more grown-up feel, and a quiet, sophisticated allure.

Above: You can see these colors at play in Alexandra & Eliot's 1890's Farmhouse. The soft, muted pinks and blues have a little grey in them, which means they play nicely with the grey and beige tones in the space.

Farrow & Ball's 'Pink Ground' paint, seen here in a space from Nordic Design, is almost but not quite band aid-y, a subtle, sophisticated pink that also makes a surprisingly good neutral.

If these muted pastels remind you a little bit of the 80s, you are definitely on to something. These kinds of colors were especially popular then, as seen in fashion designer Thierry Mugler's Paris apartment, from Living well: The New York Times Book of Home Design and Decoration (via Supreme Interiors).

Paloma Picasso's Paris apartment (also from Living well: The New York Times Book of Home Design and Decoration, via Supreme Interiors) displays similar colors.

These new pastels are especially sophisticated when paired with black, as seen in an interior from Quartier Creativ.

With these more muted tones, you can paint an entire room in light blue without the effect seeming too childish. Image from My Domaine.

And here's yet another Paris apartment, from The Style Files, whose subtle pinks, blues, and purples add color and soften the space while still seeming impossibly chic.
