6 Ideas to Steal from a Gorgeous Australian Kitchen

Kitchens remodeled in older homes can sometimes wind up feeling a bit like an afterthought — a curiously modern space shoehorned into an old house where it doesn't quite belong. But such is not the case in this kitchen. Its design, especially the coloring and detailing, ensure that a new kitchen with all the modern conveniences blends seamlessly into an old Georgian house. Even if your own home is a bit newer, you'll find plenty of details here worth stealing for your own kitchen.

Painting the cabinets just slightly darker than the wall gives the cabinets an always-been-there, built-in look, and keeps the focus on the room's gorgeous architectural features. You'll notice that the floor, wall, trim, and cabinets are all painted in slightly different shades of white (or light grey, if you want to call it that) which adds just a bit of texture while preserving a light, airy feel.

Speaking of colors—if you're considering white marble countertops or a backsplash, like the ones here, consider painting your cabinets in a pale grey, which is a beautiful complement to the marble's light veining.

An open vintage-style island adds to the available workspace—and provides a spot for friends to gather in the center of the kitchen—without the bulky look of many islands. The warm wood of the island provides a nice contrast to all that white.

A thoughtful combination of glass-front cabinets and open shelving provides a place to display treasured objects (and preserves the kitchen's light, open feel) while avoiding the unfinished look that open shelving can sometimes have.

If you don't love the idea of a walk-in pantry (or if your home just doesn't have room for one), consider a full-height pantry cabinet instead. This kitchen has two, flanking the stove: the one on the left has a pull-out component that's perfect for storing pots and pans.
