5 Reasons Your Mall Shopping Trip Counts as a Workout Day

During the hectic holiday season your to-do list is probably longer than you'd like; at the top of that list is probably a trip to the shops. Spending long hours navigating the sales and bustling through crowded boutiques can be exhausting, and the last thing you'd want to do after getting caught in that shopping shuffle is a workout.

For those of us who may not make it to the gym after a shopping spree—don't sweat. We've compiled reasons it's alright that you skipped the gym today, because you braved the mall during holiday shopping season—and that is tough.

Reason #1: You grabbed the farthest parking spot.

The parking lot was absolutely packed, and the only empty space was a mile away from the store's entrance. It may not have seemed ideal at the time, but clocking those extra steps to and from will get you closer to meeting your activity goals for the day.

Reason #2: You did an extra lap at the start to plan your attack.

Just as a wild animal stalks its prey, taking a meander across the mall before heading into a store gives you extra time to organize your thoughts, strategize your shopping route, and mentally check off what's left on your list. While many of us usually do this type of brainstorming sitting in our car, taking it on the go is a great way to keep your heart rate elevated.

Reason #3: You took the stairs instead of the elevator.

Skip elevators and escalators. By taking the extra time to use the (probably less crowded) stair route, you work your glutes as you make your way from store to store. Who needs an elliptical when you can burn calories and strengthen your lower body while ticking off an item off your list? Bonus points if you had to weave through slow steppers!

Reason #4: You picked up the heavy items first.

Usually we'd pick up the heaviest items at our last shopping destination, to decrease the time we have to lug around extra pounds. But if you purchase the bigger stuff at the first store, and have to carry it around throughout the shopping journey, that's a pretty fair weight lifting session. Pro tip: Bring sturdy, reusable bags that can carry the weight.

Reason #5: You had to sprint to grab the last of an item.

Shopping aisle show-downs are no joke. If you had to hustle to grab the last sale priced KitchenAid Mixer, that definitely counts as cardio.
