5 Kitchen Trends with Serious Staying Power

If you're remodeling your kitchen and you're not independently wealthy, it's understandable that you'd be concerned about your design's longevity. After all, you can't put your cabinets in a bag and take them to Goodwill if you get tired of them. Some things that are currently wildly popular in the kitchen will probably look dated in a few years, but there are some trends that I think have serious staying power. Here are five at the top of my list.

Glass-front cabinets (shown above)

Like open shelving, these cabinets lighten up the look of a kitchen a bit, but they also protect your dishes from grease, dust, and grime, and impart a timeless feel.

Farmhouse sinks

These have in common with glass-front cabinets that they've been enjoying a great deal of popularity as of late, but they also hearken back to an earlier time. Whether you choose a fancier marble or stone version or opt for a more humble ceramic one, I think this is a solid choice for your kitchen.

Shaker cabinets

Shaker cabinets, with their distinct stile and rail design, add architectural definition and a feeling of timelessness to your kitchen.

Subway tile

Subway tile is so ubiquitous as of late that some people are starting to tire of it, but I'd still vouch for its longevity for a few reasons: it's inexpensive, it looks good with practically anything, and it can be arranged in all kinds of interesting and unexpected ways. It's like the skinny jeans of the homebuilding world.

Dark cabinets

For most of the 90s cabinets in dark wood stains ruled, and from then it was (what felt like) all white cabinets, all the time. We've just started to observe the ascendancy of black cabinets in the kitchen, and black everything else, and I think this is a trend that will be around for quite a while.
